How Long Does Divorce Mediation Take?

One of the most commonly asked questions for divorce counselors is how long the mediation will take. If you’re asking yourself, “how long does divorce mediation in Las Vegas take?” the chances are, you’re likely already gearing up for the process. Many divorces only take a few sessions that are a couple of hours each. While every divorce is different and the length of time can vary from situation to situation, there are a few key factors to keep in mind.

How Long the Marriage Has Been “Over”

While your marriage isn’t over until the divorce is done, the amount of time you and your spouse have considered it “over” can have an impact on the amount of time your divorce mediation in Las Vegas will take. While shorter periods between wanting to end the marriage and the mediation process don’t always equal longer mediation, having more time to process in between can make mediation go faster for you and your future ex.

If you have a longer amount of time, both parties will have a chance to come to terms with the divorce happening. It will make it easier to process and there will not be as many emotions involved as there might if you haven’t had a long time to process. If you’re not letting your emotions get in the way, the mediation can go more smoothly.

While your marriage isn’t over until the divorce is done, the amount of time you and your spouse have considered it “over” can have an impact on the amount of time your mediation will take.

Your Preparation

No matter how much has happened, you’re still going to need to do something to make sure that you’re prepared for your mediation sessions. Whether that means bringing documents with you, a list of issues that need to be resolved, or anything that your mediator needs to address. Bringing these items will make your sessions faster and more successful. It doesn’t always take days and days of paperwork to make a mediation happen. Your mediator will likely need some items (and some cooperation) from both parties.

Be prepared for your divorce mediation in Las Vegas. Make sure you plan ahead if your mediator has asked you to bring anything with you. Come prepared with questions you have. Doing this will not only allow the mediator to do their job more efficiently but will also make the process move along faster.

Issues That You Need to Decide On

If you have a lot of issues that you need to iron out during mediation, the process could take longer. Things like property, valuable items, kids, and more can all complicate the situation and make the mediation take longer. It’s important to note, though, that this is for a good reason. All of these things are incredibly important during your life and during your divorce. Taking the time to come up with agreements that both parties can agree on will allow you to have a more successful outcome.

Ability to Compromise

Compromising is a hallmark of a good divorce. It doesn’t matter how nasty things got during the marriage, if you can compromise during the divorce, you can come out successful. There are likely different areas that you and your ex will be willing to compromise on. Take your time to consider alternative options. Don’t be afraid to voice your opinion if you want to bring change to something. Perhaps one of the best results of mediation is creating something that both parties can agree on. It’ll take some compromise to get there.

The more willing both parties are to compromise during mediation, the faster the process will go. If the mediator has to spend a lot of time going back and forth to determine a solution, it’ll take longer to get the process finished.

Professionalism

Your mediator should be a true professional. A professional will not just conduct the mediation in a fast manner but will be able to do it thoroughly in a short amount of time. This efficiency is the difference between a mediator who knows what they are doing with a lot of experience and one that is not a true professional. Your choice in mediator will not only determine the amount of time you spend on the mediation sessions but can also impact the outcome.

Make sure you plan ahead if your mediator has asked you to bring anything with you.

Flexibility From Both Parties

You have to be flexible. Your spouse has to be flexible. Making sure that you have flexibility in your schedule. If your mediator has to spend time finding a specific spot in the schedule that works with two very strict other schedules, it’s going to take longer to get things done. Keeping your schedule open and making sure the other party does the same will allow you to go through mediation faster.

Your divorce mediation in Las Vegas depends on so many different factors, but making sure that you pay close attention to each of these will allow you to have a more accurate idea of how long your mediation will take. While there may be some things that are out of your control, there are others like your time and choice in mediator, that will make your mediation go faster! Choose the right mediator to guide you through the process today.
